Meet the glamorous black hat first introduced in my ultimate summer post. I never wear it because I imagine the hat would only feel at home on the French riviera - a poetic interpretation suggesting its prime time hasn't come yet. Whimsical perhaps, but I've bought pieces knowing I am not going to start wearing them immediately more than once. Have you ever experienced a compelling, inexplicable drive to do something you only really understood weeks, months, years later? This is where fashion and life draw parallels. Sometimes you just have to wait for the pieces to fall into place.

H&M stripe top

H&M stripe top

1. Stripe top. I can't get away from varieties of sailor chic at the seaside, probably because it doesn't require any complex renditions. The city inspires (challenges, provokes ...) me to dress up, seaside not so much. I think the secret of sailor chic really is that it's so versatile, it doesn't look out of place on the beach nor when you're out on the town in the evening. It saves you when you don't want to spend too much time getting dolled up in the heat, but you still want to look nice. And it's neutral enough to suit everyone, though it's up to you to decide whether that's good or not.

books2. Books. I've read more than 200 books in the past 2 months for university, but after I had taken my last exam, I went straight to the library to borrow more. Summer vacation is always the perfect opportunity to catch up on those books you didn't have time to read through the year. Currently on the menu: The Picture of Dorian Gray for the nth time.

3. Sunglasses. My love for sunglasses stems from the fact that you can use them for so many occasions, out of which their primary purpose - protecting your eyes from sun - is actually the most boring. Sunglasses are for when you don't want attention, when you want a ton of attention, when you want to cover up the consequences of last night's partying, when you're too lazy to put on make-up, when you'd prefer somebody doesn't find out you've had your eyes on them all day, when you feel like a celebrity and wear sunglasses indoors.

With this particular Alain Mikli pair, the uninitiated always tease me I'm wearing them upside down.

A gift from mom. "For your good grades," she said. I'm happy that studying like a maniac didn't pay off in just good grades.

H&M bracelet

I am saving money for my autumnal pilgrimages to fashion weeks (starting with New York), which calls for a moratorium on shopping extravagancies. This little H&M bracelet is a substitute for all the beautiful dresses and shoes that could (not) have been mine.

All-white summer fantasy

I've written about how excited I am to wear coral red in summer; for me, coral red is mostly a seasonal fascination, though I think it complements sailor chic and white and dark blue stripes like no other color and should therefore be in at all times. The one idea that inevitably does come back to me every summer is wearing all white. Since I've been looking for people in such attire with a magnifying glass, I'll suppose all white takes a bit more guts than all black (though doing all black well - not because you want to hide or think it'll instantly make you look like you're Serious Business - is a science. Learn from the best: The Divinitus). Of course, the very practical reason behind us not wearing more white might just be that you get your white clothes dirty in one, two, three.

Here's my little prelude to summer. I'm going to resurrect this dress after it's been dormant in my closet for several years. Linen is funny, you iron your dress and then you realize it's most beautiful with wrinkles anyway. White suggests perfection and wrinkles break it. A contrast in a single garment.
